At our school, both Physical Education and Art & Applied Skills programs are designed to nurture students’ holistic development—fostering physical vitality, creative thinking, teamwork and personal growth. Let’s dive into the highlights shared by PE teacher Ms. Russell and Art & Applied Skills teacher Mr. Maksym.
体育课程 PE Curriculum
我校体育课程开设丰富多样的运动项目，学生可参与各类团队运动，涵盖篮球、足球、羽毛球、飞盘、排球等；田径、体能训练等个人运动项目同样是课程核心内容。此外，所有体育课均配套理论课堂，向学生传授健康生活方式与心理情绪调节相关知识。
Our PE curriculum offers a diverse range of sports and activities for students. Students can engage in a huge variety of team sports, basketball, soccer, badminton, frisbee and volleyball. Individual sports and events like track and field and fitness are also key parts of the program. Additionally, all PE classes include a classroom component that teaches students about healthy living habits and mental/emotional health.
我们充分尊重学生运动能力的个体差异。体育老师采用循序渐进的教学模式：先教授基础技能，再逐步进阶至高难度训练。课程考核以课堂参与度为主，只要态度认真、积极投入，即便运动天赋普通，也能取得优异成绩。
We understand that students have significant differences in athletic ability. PE teachers focus on introducing new skills first, then scaffolding to more difficult tasks. Assessment is largely based on participation—hardworking and focused students can still obtain a high score regardless of their athletic performance.
BC课程学生仅十年级开设体育课。为保障11和12年级学生持续坚持运动，学校也开设了体能训练11/12和活力生活11/12课程。同时，有意从事体育教练、赛事营销、体育管理方向的学生，还可选修体育领导力课程。课堂之外，我们致力于帮助学生养成终身健康生活习惯，即便不再修读体育课，也能自主做出健康生活选择。
For BC program students, PE classes are only available in Grade 10. To ensure Grade 11 and 12 students stay physically active, we offered Fitness 11/12 and Active Living 11/12 too. An Athletic Leadership course is also available for students interested in coaching, marketing and sports management. Beyond classes, we aim to equip students with lifelong healthy habits so they can make positive choices even without PE courses.
体育课设有趣味实践项目：舞蹈项目培养学生协作配合、平衡协调能力与空间感知力；其他特色项目聚焦营养健康、心理健康与体能提升。未来，我们还会增设其他教学单元，进一步丰富体育课程体系。
PE classes feature engaging projects, including a dance project that helps students build collaboration, teamwork, balance, coordination and spatial awareness. Other projects focus on nutrition, mental health and fitness. Looking ahead, we hope to add other units to enrich the PE curriculum further.
艺术与应用技能课程
Vibrant Art & Applied Skills courses
全年校内为学生提供大量公开展示艺术作品的机会：选课季，视觉艺术专业学生面向意向新生及家长现场展示手工创作；媒体艺术学生的作品收录在校刊中，校刊栏目版式、摄影图片、封面设计均由校刊社团学生独立完成。每年的校园艺术节中，校园长廊将陈列学生艺术作品，部分作品可公益认购，所得款项将全数捐赠至上海仁德基金协会。课程注重培养学生自我认知与审美素养。整个学期中，学生会参与同伴互评、专业指导反馈环节，运用设计要素与美学原理打磨作品。每个学习单元均设置自我反思任务，结合核心素养与原住民学习理念开展学习总结。课堂小结单与单元复盘任务，帮助学生复盘成长、梳理所学、规划目标。
Students get frequent chances to showcase their art publicly year-round. During course selection, visual arts students demonstrate crafts to prospective students and parents. Media Arts students’ work is featured in the yearbook, with student-designed spreads, photography, cover and layout work from the Yearbook Club. May is our annual Art Month, hallways are filled with student artwork, and select pieces are available for purchase (donations go to the Special Fund of Shanghai Rende Foundation). The program prioritizes fostering students’ personal awareness. Throughout the semester, students participate in peer critiques and guided feedback sessions to refine their work using design elements and principles. Each unit includes self-reflection tasks linked to core competencies and First Peoples Principles of Learning. Exit tickets and unit reflections help students assess growth, articulate learning and set future goals.
为打通课堂学习与现实应用，学校每年组织艺术研学之旅，探访专业艺术家、探寻艺术行业应用场景。过往研学目的地包括：上海摄影艺术中心、可可香奈儿时尚设计展、上海艺术博物馆、田子坊等。
To connect classroom learning with the real world, students go on annual field trips to meet professional artists and explore art applications. Past trips include visits to Fotografiska Shanghai, the Coco Chanel fashion design exhibit, the Shanghai Museum of Art and Tianzifang.
艺术与应用技能课程培养学生多项可迁移实用能力：数字素养、视觉传达、版式设计原理、创造性问题解决能力。学生独立或组队完成校刊制作、影视拍摄、艺术展览等真实项目，逐步提升项目统筹与作品展示表达的自信心。
Applied design courses equip students with valuable transferable skills: digital literacy, visual communication, layout/design principles and creative problem-solving. Students learn to work independently and collaboratively on real-world projects like yearbooks, films and exhibits, building confidence in project management and presentation.

A message from Mr. Maksym to all students: “Take pride in the creative journey, not just the final product—every mistake or revision is part of your growth as an artist and designer. Be bold, take creative risks, and trust your ideas—you never know who your work might inspire or where your skills may take you in the future.”
