10D Susan Wu:
I had the honor of having a nice talk with the school inspector of the BC department. The school inspector was also very kind and started a conversation with a few of us in a chatty way. The supervisor asked us the usual questions, and the one that stood out to me the most was how is this BC school different from other schools? I think we pay more attention to students’ own ideas and opinions. We allow students to have different opinions from the teachers, and the teachers respect our ideas and we have equal rights to talk to them. And we have a lot of activities, learning is not the only important thing, the school focuses on our overall development. During my exchange with the school inspector, I deeply felt the school’s emphasis on creative and critical thinking skills. The inspector emphasized the school’s atmosphere of encouraging students to be creative and to challenge traditional ideas, which gave me a clearer understanding of the school’s educational philosophy and characteristics, and filled me with confidence and expectation.
11A Sunny Zhuo:
The conversation with the BC inspector was relaxed, pleasant, and impressive. The inspector chatted with us in a friendly way and asked us about our experience and feelings of school life. One of the questions is why do students wear uniforms at school? Wearing uniform can show how students’ collective identity, whilst helping new students integrate into school life. The school uniforms can also help boost a student’s confident as it recognizes them as a part of the school community. In addition, he emphasizes that students should have their own ideas and opinions and show up the independent thinking is very important. At SUIS Jiaoke, the school encourages and cultivates our creative thinking and self-discerning ability, helping us to build an independent personality. All these events fully increased my expectations and passion for future school life.
12A Cindy Xu:
I was honored to guide BC Ministry Supervisors on Monday morning for a campus tour. We walked along from the offer wall through the covered area, labs, coffee bar to the PE building. After seeing the exhibition of works created by our G12 students based on the English novel, the supervisors asked me questions about our school’s teaching philosophy. I told them about the critical thinking training we experience in Jiaoke BC and how the school’s learning environment encourages communication with teachers and how it enhances our abilities in different areas. The curriculum allows each of us to have opportunities, and the variety of assignments allows us to expand our potential in different areas rather than just memorizing knowledge on textbooks. For example, I have done assignments on writing script, making short film, planning and organizing large-scale events in the past few months. When I introduced the school library, I mentioned to the supervisors that I work as a peer tutor at school, where we often discuss questions together after school and make progress together. In the new school year, we have implemented the house system, where every month there are different sports activities designed by the leadership students, which strengthens the connection between classes of different grades and also encourages senior students to help the new students.
